Grandmothers make the best homemade meals. Grandfathers are ready to play at the drop of a hat. Here are some great ways to make them feel special on Grandparents Day.

Grandparents Day is a day set aside to honor your grandparents. It is a time to reflect on all the things that you love about them, and all the special ways they make you feel. This holiday became a national observance in the United States in 1978. It is proclaimed that the first Sunday after Arbor Day will be Grandparents Day each year.

Special Meal for Grandparents

Grandmothers make all kinds of great homemade meals. Use this day to do the cooking for her instead. Here is a tasty meal that grandchildren can pitch in together and cook for the special occasion:

Chicken Pot Pie

Pie Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, cubed
  • 2 cans cream of chicken soup
  • 1 (16-oz.) can mixed vegetables, drained

Crust Ingredients:

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup milk

Directions:

  1. Combine chicken, chicken soup, and mixed vegetables into a casserole dish.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, oil, and milk for the crust.
  3. Pour the crust mixture over top of the chicken mixture.
  4. Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes or until crust browns.

Ice Cream Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 package devils food cake

  • 3/4 cup of chocolate fudge frosting
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups softened vanilla ice cream

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch pans.
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine all ingredients, except for the ice cream, for 2 minutes at high speed with a mixer.
  4. Spread the mixture in the pans.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool completely.
  6. Spread ice cream in the pies. Cover with foil and freeze at least 2 hours before serving.

Great Gifts from Grandkids

Homemade gifts are always on the top of the list. Grandparents love to see what works of art your children can create. Here are some neat ideas:

Coupon Book. Create a coupon book by using no-line index cards. Punch a hole in the top left corner of each card with a hole punch. Design each card with markers. When completed, tie a ribbon through the holes to bind the book together. Coupons could consist of:

  • One free house cleaning
  • Infinite hugs
  • Five free grass cuts
  • One free batch of homemade cookies

Gift Basket. Fill a basket with your grandparent's favorite items, including puzzle books, hot tea bags, bookmarks, peppermint candies, and other things that you know they enjoy. Be sure to include a homemade card!

Framed Poem. Write a poem and design the page with scrapbook items. Frame the poem to give as a gift. A sample poem includes:

Grandparents are meant for kisses and hugs ~ For watching rainbows and catching bugs ~ For baking all of your favorite things ~ For books to read and songs to sing. ~ Love, (your name)

Showing that you care enough to go out of your way for your grandparents on this special day will mean so much. Remember it is the little things that you do that add up to the surmountable happiness that you give.
