Praying for our children is a powerful tool to keep them safe in school, and provides opportunity for fellowship. Start a Christian Mom's prayer group in your area.

The idea of starting a Christian Mom’s prayer group in your child’s public school may seem like a great idea, but you need to be careful before doing so. Many schools discourage activities that express any certain religion for fear excluding others. However, there are probably many moms just like you who are interested in joining such as group. Here are some tips for getting a prayer group started in your child’s public school.

Meet with the Principal

If you are truly interested in starting a Christian prayer group, the best thing would be to start by talking to your school principal. Express your ideas and tell him why you feel this would be a good idea. Most principals will be receptive to the idea, but will probably suggest that you have the meetings in another place besides the school grounds. In addition, you may not be allowed to solicit members or advertise using PTA correspondence or hanging posters or flyers in the school.

Find Your Members

The next thing you will want to do is find other moms that are interested in the idea. If you are not allowed to advertise at your child’s school, then word of mouth is the best way to get your idea out. Emails are perfect and you may find that you soon have a large group ready to meet. Another option is to announce the prayer group in your community newspaper.

Find a Meeting Place

Now you must find a meeting place. If you have only a handful of members then rotating homes may work well. However, if you have more than 10, you may need to look at bigger locations. See if there is a church nearby that can accommodate your needs. Most churches are more than receptive to hosting a prayer group. Another idea is to meet during lunch at a local restaurant. Some eateries may even have a large party room that you can use for this purpose.

Meet Regularly

Once you have a place to meet and some members, decide how often you will meet. Many prayer groups do well by meeting once a month. If you have a regular meeting time (such as the first Monday of each month), it will be easier for your member to remember. The time you meet can be anytime that is convenient for your members. Morning times often work well because the kids are just dropped off at school and younger preschoolers are not ready for naps yet.

Determine the Goals of Your Prayer Group

During your first meeting, you can decide what you will do. Many moms like to pray for families in need, for their own children, for all children in the school, and for the school in general (its staff and administrators). You can have each mom bring a prayer request. These meetings can be informal as you choose.

The main focus of a Christian Mom's prayer group is to unite in prayer to uplift and encourage children, prayer for safety during school hours, and prayer for those who make daily decisions that affect the students education. These groups have been in existence for many years all over the world, and you can play an integral part in helping the cause in your own community.

Moms in Touch

The Moms in Touch organization is a great resource for jumpstarting your prayer group. You will find articles, devotions, and learn how moms across the U.S. are praying for their children and schools on a weekly basis.
