Children love crafting and as they become excited about science in primary school, a wonderful opportunity arises to incorporate both areas of learning into Christian education at home. This article has simple, fun craft ideas, with related Bible verses and discussion questions for primary level science instruction.

Science Topic: The Weather

Bible Verse: "He brings the wind out of His treasuries." Psalm 135:17

  1. Discussion Questions: How do we know when the wind is blowing? What color is the wind? What games can we play in the wind? How do animals enjoy God's wind?
  2. Craft: "Make a Wind chime" - You will need a cardboard paper towel tube, 4 tongue depressors, tempera paint or markers, nylon fishing string, jingle bells, scissors, large nail and hammer, cotton balls, white glue, white paper, black permanent marker.
  3. Steps: Cut 4 pieces of string , 12, 10, 8 and 6 inches in length. Use the nail to punch 4 evenly spaced holes through the paper tube and also punch a hole at the end of each tongue depressor and attach one piece of string to each. Have children print the Bible verse on the tube, and decorate the depressors with markers or paint. When dry, string the depressors through the holes on the tube and attach. Tie a string through the tube and hang somewhere the wind will make it dance.

Science Topic: The Ocean

Bible Verse: "God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves." Genesis 1:21

  1. Discussion Questions: Why did God tell Noah to build the ark? What were some of the animals Noah put on the ark? Why didn't Noah put the ocean animals on the ark?
  2. Craft: "Make a Pretzel Ark" - You will need enough bow shaped pretzels for each child, construction paper, scissors and crayons or colored markers.
  3. Steps: Have the child print the Bible verse on a small strip of paper and glue to the front of the pretzel. Trace around the pointing finger of the child 4 times and cut the shapes from the construction paper. On each, have the child draw a different animal's head and color. Glue each animal shape to the back of the pretzel to resemble the ark full of animals.

Science Topic: Animals

Bible Verse: "Every creature of God is good." 1 Timothy 4:4

  1. Discussion Questions: What is your favorite animal? Do you think God has a favorite animal? If you could ask God to create a new animal, what would it look like?
  2. Craft: "Make a Thumbprint Animal" - You will need a washable black ink pad, pieces of white paper, crayons or colored markers, and damp paper towels.
  3. Steps: Have children print the Bible verse in the middle of the white paper, then print their thumbs all around the verse. Colored markers or crayons may then be used to make the prints into imaginary animals by adding legs, feelers, hair, etc. Have children tell about their animal creations.

Science Topic: The Human Body

Bible Verse: "Your hands have made me and fashioned me." - Job 10:8

  1. Discussion Questions: Why do you think God made everyone look different? What is special about the way you look? How do you look different than your best friend? How are you like your friend?
  2. Craft: "Make a Mirror Friend" - You will need a small purse mirror for each child, colored yarn, glue, scissors, colored markers, small pieces of trim like ribbon, fabric, etc.
  3. Steps: Have children cut and glue "hair" on the mirrors using colored yarn. Trim can be used for ribbons or ties if desired, and a collar added at the bottom of each mirror. Have the children pass the mirrors around so others can see how they are all alike, but different.
